DETROIT, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Michigan's presidential primary victories went to Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and former Massachusetts Republican Gov. Mitt Romney.

With 97 percent of the vote counted from Tuesday's vote, Clinton -- the only major candidate on the Democrats' ballot -- led 55 percent to 40 percent for Uncommitted.

Michigan native Romney led Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., 39 percent-30 percent, with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee third at 16 percent.

Because Michigan ran its primaries before Feb. 5, the national parties punished the state as to sending delegates to the national convention in the summer. No Democrats from Michigan can vote in the convention and only half of the state's 60 Republican delegates will be able to vote.

Clinton's nearest rivals, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., chose to keep their names off the Michigan ballot in solidarity with the national party's rules.

Michigan has voted Democratic in the last four presidential contests.
