CAGLIARI, Italy, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- About 1,000 people on the Italian island of Sardinia participated in a sometimes-violent protest against a plan to ship trash there from Naples.

Six people were arrested Friday night in the island capital, Cagliari, the BBC reported. Eight people were hurt as demonstrators burned trash barrels and threw stones at police.

Dumps in the Naples area are full, a crisis blamed on control of the industry by the Camorra or Neapolitan Mafia. Naples officials are trying to find a home for about 100,000 tons of garbage, and Sardinia was the first to offer to accept some.

There also have been protests in Naples, and Prime Minister Romano Prodi has promised a rapid response by police to any violence.
