Nuclear talks held in Iran

TEHRAN, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency met Saturday with Iranian officials to discuss that country's nuclear ambitions.

Mohammed ElBaradei met in Tehran with Saeed Jalili, the Iranian secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, the Kuwait news agency KUNA reported.

The two men reviewed prospects for resuming talks between Iran and the United Nations Security Council, reported RIA Novosti.

The five permanent members of the council and Germany tried previously to convince Iran to halt uranium enrichment. Those talks stalled when sanctions were imposed against Iran, which some Western nations, including the United States, suspect is pursuing a weapons program, the Russian news agency reported.

Iran has said it is enriching uranium only to produce energy for peaceful purposes.
