WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton unveiled a $70 billion package she said would stimulate the U.S. economy and help families in distress.

Her plan, outlined on her campaign Web site, would help homeowners hit by the housing credit crisis, provide relief to families facing high energy bills, support unemployed workers and make immediate investments in "green collar jobs" that stimulate the economy while improving the environment.

"We need an immediate strategy to get our economy back on track, the U.S. senator from New York said in a news release. "I would work with leaders from both parties to pass an aggressive, fast-acting stimulus package to create good new jobs and revitalize our economy."

Clinton said she thought the economy needed a jumpstart that wouldn't affect the United States' long-term fiscal position.

Her plan also calls on Congress to be prepared to provide an additional $40 billion in direct tax rebates to working- and middle-class families if the economy continues to worsen.
