ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Pakistan, rejecting reported comments by the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, said Wednesday its nuclear arsenal is fully secure.

Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq said the weapons are "fully secure and under multi-layered safeguards," the Press Trust of India reported.

He was responding to comments Mohammad ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, reportedly made to an Arab daily in which was quoted as expressing concern about Pakistan's nuclear arsenal falling into extremists' hands.

"As head of the IAEA, which is a U.N. body, he has to be careful about his statements which ought to remain within the parameters of his mandate," PTI quoted Sadiq as saying.

He said the IAEA is only concerned with safeguarded civilian nuclear facilities and any comments by the agency's head should remain with this mandate, the report said.
