Accused rapist's STD testing protested

FLINT, Mich., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A rights group is protesting a Flint, Mich., judge's order that a man accused of raping three women be tested for sexually transmitted diseases.

Kevin Thomas, 32, faces 18 charges stemming from the three incidents that occurred Oct. 22 and Oct. 24. However, he hasn't faced a probable cause hearing and is undergoing psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is competent to face trial, the Flint Journal reported.

Gregory Gibbs, a director of the Greater Flint American Civil Liberties Union protested Central District Judge John Conover's decision to allow the STD testing as requested by prosecutors on the alleged victims' behalf.

"It would result in a situation where the private medical history of someone who is merely accused would be subject to a government search," Gibbs said.

Prosecutors said without the tests, the women could wait for months to determine if they might have been infected.

Conover, however, said in approving the testing it could also benefit Thomas, the newspaper said.
