ELIZABETH, N.J., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- The Rev. Al Sharpton said he'd been asked to broker the surrender of New Jersey prison fugitive Otis Blunt.
Sharpton told prosecutors Monday he was "prepared to move within the next 24 to 48 hours," The New York Times said. Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said two days was too much time.
"I would request Reverend Sharpton contact the Union County police and make arrangements to surrender Mr. Blunt immediately," Romankow said in a statement.
Blunt and Jose Espinosa chiseled holes in jail walls and covered them with magazine photos before escaping through them by jumping 25 feet on Dec. 15. Blunt was awaiting trial in the shooting of a convenience store manager. Espinosa, a Bloods street gang member, was awaiting sentencing in a 2005 drive-by shooting.
A New Jersey jail guard, distraught after being sarcastically thanked by two escaped convicts, committed suicide. A note left behind included a smiley face and the words: "Thank you Officer ... for the tools needed. You're a real Pal! Happy Holidays."
