NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- An art dealer in Florida has helped police recover two rare watercolors featuring scenes from the Walt Disney movie "Fantasia."
The valuable works of art had been missing since 1991. New Smyrna Beach art dealer Bill Tirrell learned they were stolen property after purchasing them last October, the Orlando Sentinel said Sunday.
Det. Sgt. Terence Wilson of the Rye Brook Police Department said Tirrell had purchased the pieces from a California art dealer, who also had not been aware they had been stolen.
But after researching the watercolors' history, Tirrell learned they had once been on loan to the now-closed Museum of Cartoon Art in New York and immediately contacted police.
Wilson told the Sentinel that while the recovery was a positive step in the cold case, three other pieces involved in the 1991 theft were still missing.
"It's nice when you close out an old major case," he said. "But to me it's not completely closed out. We're going to continue to follow it and hopefully get the other three pieces."
