Canadian avalanche leaves skiers missing

KELOWNA, British Columbia, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Two skiers were rescued following a major avalanche in the Canadian province of British Columbia Sunday, but three skiers were still believed missing.

An official at the Big White Ski Resort in the Kelowna said three people had not been accounted, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

"We have unconfirmed reports from friends, and witnesses and people that were involved in the avalanche, and right now, two and possibly a third person is unaccounted for," resort official Michael Ballingall said.

After the avalanche rumbled through Parachute Bowl, rescuers found two skiers buried in the snow and immediately took them for medical treatment.

Ballingall told the CBC the resort was assisting in the search for the remaining skiers.

"We're currently conducting a search that is being led by the head of ski patrol at Big White Ski Resort," he said.
