Poland, Czech Republic to discuss shield

WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Poland and the Czech Republic are pressing ahead with talks on U.S. plans to deploy a missile shield in Europe opposed by Russia.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his Czech counterpart, Mirek Topolank, are to meet next week in the Czech Republic to discuss deployment of the shield in their countries, RIA Novosti reported Saturday.

The United States wants to put radar equipment in the Czech Republic and 10 missile interceptors in Poland to counter missile threats from rogue countries, such as Iran.

Russian officials, however, say the shield threatens Russian security and would destroy the strategic balance of armed forces in Europe, RIA Novosti reported.
