CHICAGO, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A U.S. citizen convicted of aiding terrorists is suing a former federal official whose legal opinions formed the basis for alleged torture techniques.
Jose Padilla's lawyers Friday filed suit against John Yoo, a former deputy assistant attorney general who now teaches law at the University of California at Berkeley, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.
Yoo was an "essential part of what will be viewed by history as a group of rogue officials acting under cover of law to undermine fundamental rights," Jonathan Freiman, one of Padilla's lawyers, told the Tribune.
Padilla, a former Chicago street gang member who attended terrorist training camps in Central Asia during the 1990s, alleges he was subjected after his arrest in 2002 to foul odors, extreme temperatures, sleep and sensory deprivation and standing in painful positions, the Tribune reported.
The suit filed in U.S. District Court in California focuses on Yoo, who in 2002 as a federal official wrote memoranda on alleged torture techniques subsequently used on suspected al-Qaida operatives, the newspaper said. Yoo declined comment when contacted by the Tribune.
