SEATTLE, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A judge in Washington state has sentenced a 79-year-old woman to prison for pretending to be a psychic in order to bilk a lovesick woman.
The Seattle Times reported Saturday that Sophie Evon was sentenced in King County to 1 1/2 years in prison for tricking a woman into handing over her life savings by telling her she would use psychic powers to improve the woman's romantic life.
During Evon's trial, prosecutors said she had convinced an unidentified 26-year-old woman to give her and her daughter-in-law more than $200,000 in order to win back the affections of a boyfriend.
Prosecutors said that after garnering the money from the lovesick woman in 1999, both Evon and her daughter-in-law, Sophie Evans, fled to Canada.
The pair were later arrested in Toronto. Lee was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the psychic scam.
The Times said that while Evon initially only faced a standard sentence of six months, King County Superior Court Judge Nicole MacInnes handed down a harsher sentence due to the details of the crime.
