NEW YORK, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A New York man charged with peddling military equipment to an undercover agent says he was trying to get the agent to invest in his business.
Abdul Ibn Tawala Alishtari of Ardsley, N.Y., has been held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York since his arrest in February. He asked a judge this week to release him from special confinement and into the general population, the Westchester Journal News reported.
Alishtari described himself in court papers as "a proud citizen of the United States."
His lawyers say tapes made of Alishtari's conversations with the undercover agent, who was posing as a rich Middle Eastern man, show he was far more interested in money than politics. Alishtari owned Flat Electronic Data Exchange.
Alishtari and his business partner, Brian Anderson, are both charged with money laundering. Alishtari also faces terrorism-related charges.
