Domino's: Drivers cannot carry guns

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- A spokesman for Domino's says a St. Louis pizza deliveryman who killed a robber would have been fired for carrying a gun if he had not quit.

Tim McIntyre said drivers are trained to protect themselves from theft when they are hired, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. They must also sign agreements that they will not carry weapons.

Drivers are told not to wear jewelry or carry large amounts of cash and to check back if a delivery address looks doubtful. If they are held up, they are advised to hand over the money -- and the pizza.

"The best way to save yourself from harm is to get the situation over as quickly and efficiently as possible," McIntyre said. "That typically will result in us needing to replace a pizza but not having to deal with a tragedy."

Police have not identified the driver who killed Brian Smith, 19, Dec. 27. Rodney Reese, who allegedly grabbed the driver's wallet and the pizza and took off, has been charged with robbery and second-degree murder.
