President Bush returns to Washington

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The American public gave President George W. Bush poor marks for his handling of several issues in the Middle East and Afghanistan, a Harris poll reported.

Sixty-two percent of respondents gave Bush a negative rating for his handling of the Israeli-Palestinian issue while only 25 percent give him positive marks, Harris Interactive said Thursday.

When asked their opinion about Bush's handling of the situation in Afghanistan, 26 percent of respondents said he was doing a good job while 63 percent said he wasn't.

One of Bush's main policy initiatives, the war on terror, also showed waning support, the Rochester, N.Y., polling agency said. Only 32 percent of respondents gave Bush positive ratings for his handling of the war on terror while 61 percent give him negative ratings.

The Harris Poll of 2,335 adults surveyed online was conducted between Dec. 4-12, 2007, by Harris Interactive, which does not include a margin of error in its reports.
