Sick 3-year-old faces deportation

LONDON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- The European Court of Human Rights ordered Britain to halt its efforts to deport a 3-year-old girl with kidney disease pending an investigation.

Adedoyin Fadairo, separated from her Nigerian mother, who is in an immigration detention center, has been living with her grandmother. The toddler, who was born in the United States, recently received a notice telling her to report to Heathrow International Airport to be flown to her native country, where she has no relatives, and warning her on pain of detention to obey immigration regulations, The Independent reported. Her mother has been told that the girl isn't eligible for National Health Service care.

The mother has claimed asylum in Britain on grounds that she faces persecution in Nigeria because of her membership in a human rights organization. Britain accuses her of violating rules by getting NHS care for her daughter and of passport fraud.

"After 10 years I thought I was safe here and now I find myself caught up in a nightmare where I have become separated from my daughter," the mother, who didn't want her name used, told the newspaper. "All I want is to be reunited with her and allowed to continue to live as a family in Britain. What is so wrong with that?"
