CANDLES LIT IN MEMORY OF BHUTTO IN ISLAMABAD

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had written allegations of planned government vote-rigging when she was assassinated, CNN reported Wednesday.

Aides showed the broadcaster a copy of Bhutto's claims she planned to give to two U.S. congressmen last Thursday before gunfire and a bombing at a political rally in killed her.

The transcript alleges the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's supporters "planned to create a conflict at the polling station, even killing people if necessary, to stop polls at least three to four hours" in the Jan. 8 election.

The paper by Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party also alleged U.S.-supplied intelligence equipment was being used by the government to "monitor and to keep a check" on political rivals, CNN said.

Pakistani government spokesman Rashid Qureshi told the broadcaster the allegations were unfounded.

"I think they are just a pack of lies," he said.

The country's electoral commission announced Wednesday voting would be postponed until February because of logistical problems caused by Bhutto's slaying.
