NEWARK, N.J., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- A New Jersey jail guard, distraught after being sarcastically thanked by two escaped convicts, has committed suicide.
Rudolph Zurick, 40, was found Wednesday in his home, The Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger said. Police planned to interview Zurick Wednesday about the Dec. 15 escape of Otis Blunt and Jose Espinosa, who chiseled holes in jail walls and covered them with magazine photos before escaping through the holes and jumping 25 feet.
They remained at large Wednesday.
A note left behind included a smiley face and the words: "Thank you Officer (Zurick) for the tools needed. You're a real Pal! Happy Holidays."
Zurick "was very depressed and distraught over all the media attention," police union spokesman Kenneth Burkert told the newspaper. "He just couldn't believe what happened. He was a perfectionist."
Espinosa, a Bloods street gang member, was awaiting sentencing in a 2005 drive-by shooting murder. Blunt was awaiting trial in the shooting of a convenience store manager.
