FLINT, Mich., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Heavy snows, wind and cold temperatures swept across much of the northern United States and Canada Monday night, bringing a wintry end to 2007.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning effective until noon New Year's Day with up to 11 inches of snow forecast for the Flint, Mich., area with winds up to 40 mph, The Flint Journal reported. State police advised people to stay home if possible, the newspaper said.

Travelers in Maine were stranded at the Portland International Jetport Monday as flights were canceled because of snow and ice-coated runways there, The Portland Press reported.

The Boston region was preparing to be hit with another 4-7 inches of snow overnight, which would break the December record of 27.9 inches set in 1970, the Boston Herald reported.

Another 4 inches of snow could fall in New England New Year's Day afternoon, the weather service said.

Central Indiana also had up to 4 inches of snow in its New Year's forecast. The powder was to be accompanied by winds gusting to 35 mph and temperatures stuck in the teens, The Indianapolis Star reported.

Airports across Atlantic Canada canceled or delayed numerous flights after receiving up to 15 inches of snow.
