PHOENIX, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A 24-year-old man known as "Psycho" was being sought Sunday in the shooting of six people in Phoenix.

The victims, whose names weren't released, were listed in stable condition at area hospitals following the Saturday night shootings, The Arizona Republic reported.

Police were looking for Jose "Psycho" Francisco Mendoza, who they said was standing in the street and opened fire on officers as they arrived at the scene, the newspaper reported. The two officers returned fire but Mendoza wasn't hit, the Republic said.

Five of the shooting victims were found inside a house and the sixth was in front. A wounded dog also was found.

The shootings apparently were an escalation of what started as a physical confrontation.
