DORCHESTER, Mass., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts girl and her 11-year-old brother died in a fire just hours after the girl's ninth birthday party.
The fire was started just after midnight Friday by a space heater in a bedroom of the Dorchester apartment where Rebecca and Rooben Zizi lived, fire officials said. Their sister, Belinda Zizi, 7, was awakened by the fire and woke up the rest of her sleeping family, The Boston Globe reported Sunday.
The Zizis then tried to warn the other residents of their building on their way out, but once outside realized two of their children were missing, the newspaper said.
About 60 firefighters were dispatched to battle the blaze, but they were unable to rescue Rebecca and Rooben.
The other six adults and 10 children who lived in the building escaped unharmed.
Landlord Jean Romain said everything in the building was working properly, and he plans to repair the property, despite the estimated $300,000 worth of damage.
The city's thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family, Dorchester Mayor Thomas M. Menino told the Globe.
