INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- An Indianapolis grandmother was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday for failing to get medical help for her scalded adopted son.
Prosecutors said Bessie Saffold bathed the 7-year-old in very hot water as punishment for bed-wetting. But she pleaded guilty only to neglect for denying the boy medical treatment for three weeks.
Saffold also admitted locking another child in a room and giving overly harsh spankings.
A judge sentenced her to 15 years in prison but suspended six years and imposed three years of probation. Her husband, Mechelle Saffold, got a four-year sentence.
At the sentencing hearing, four of Saffold's adopted children described abusive treatment and neglect, asking for a long prison term. Other witnesses, including a 17-year-old granddaughter, said she was a strict but loving mother.
