CONCORD, N.H., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney rallied against a surging Arizona Sen. John McCain in the prelude to the New Hampshire presidential primary.
Romney refocused his campaign strategy from targeting former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee by repeatedly volleying criticisms at McCain, who is polling strong among likely voters in New Hampshire, The Boston Globe reported Thursday.
Romney criticized McCain for supporting legislation that allowed illegal immigrants to "stay forever" and said McCain "was wrong to vote against the Bush tax cuts."
McCain responded in a column printed on the Concord Monitor Sunday that targeted Romney's declining popularity.
"I know something about tailspins, and it's pretty clear Mitt Romney is in one," McCain said.
Recent polls suggest Romney and McCain are tied in opinion polls in New Hampshire.
