MELBOURNE, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Anti-whaling protesters in Australia poured fake blood on themselves Thursday in a demonstration inside the Japanese consulate in Melbourne.

About 10 members of the activist group Animal Liberation Victoria entered the building wearing white body suits with the fake blood and signs saying "Ban Whaling."

The group's vice president, Noah Hannibal, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. they wanted to send a strong message against Japan's whaling activities in the ocean off Antarctica.

"The world is watching and we're no longer going to sit idly by and allow the slaughter of up to 1,000 whales in Australian waters," he said.
