WARSAW, Poland, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The archbishop of Lublin, Poland, has added his voice to the Catholic church's opposition to in-vitro fertilization.

Metropolitan Archbishop Jozef Zycinski in his Christmas homily said creating test-tube babies is contrary to church teaching and people's values and morals, Polish Radio reported Wednesday.

Zycinski said in-vitro fertilization should not be viewed as a private issue for childless couples or a matter of healthcare funding, despite the potential $8,000 cost.

Earlier this month, Polish Health Minister Ewa Kopacz said she will sponsor a plan to finance in-vitro fertilization for about 1 million childless Polish couples.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who took the office in mid-November, backed Kopacz's plan and said the government will try to solve one of the country's biggest problems, a declining birth rate.

Kazimierz Nycz, archbishop of Warsaw, said in-vitro fertilization is unacceptable and advocated the adoption of children as a solution for childless couples.
