NEW YORK, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The parents of a 16-year-old girl in a vegetative state will soon appear in a New York court to debate whether the teenager should be taken off life support.
When Janet Joseph and Leonard Peters appear in New York Supreme Court next month, they will each plead their case regarding the medical future of their daughter, Javona Peters, the New York Daily News said Wednesday.
Joseph has asked that her daughter be taken off life support, while Peters has remained adamant that his child remain connected to the machines keeping her alive.
"I lost my only daughter, she was my life and now she's gone and I want her to go in peace," Joseph said.
"I don't want to be selfish but my point is that I don't give life and I cannot take a life," Peters said. "I am confused."
Javona Peters slipped in a vegetative state in October following a failed operation to relieve pressure on her brain, the Daily News said.
The newspaper said that with hospital officials unwilling to remove life support from the teen without both parents' permission, the case will go to court starting Jan. 7.
