PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The corruption trial of the former coroner for Allegheny County, Pa., may be delayed based on an appeal filed Wednesday in Philadelphia.
In what is predicted to be the first of several requests that may postpone Dr. Cyril H. Wecht's trial, the chairman of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP filed an appeal of a recent order of a U.S. District Court judge, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.
Peter J. Kalis, whose law firm is representing Wecht, asked that he be exempt from U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab's ban on releasing the names of jury members in Wecht's trial.
With the news media pushing for the release of all selected jurors' name, Kalis is reportedly concerned that any leak of that classified information would be blamed on him.
Based on that growing conflict, Wecht's Jan.28 trial is expected to be postponed as all involved parties attempt to resolve all standing conflicts.
The newspaper said that Wecht is set to face 84 counts of fraud and theft stemming from his time in the coroner's office, where he allegedly used his position for personal gain.
