LONDON, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Millions of confidential National Health System medical records on compact disks and memory sticks have gone missing in Britain.
At least nine medical trusts have admitted to losing data as police were already investigating the loss of two Revenue and Customs computer disks containing the details of 25 million child benefit claimants, Sky News reported Sunday
The Department of Health said in a statement it had written to all patients involved and there was nothing to indicate the data had fallen into the wrong hands, the report said.
One of the lost CDs belonging to an east London hospital trust contained the names and addresses of thousands of children, Sky said.
"Investigations are under way in all the trusts involved, and action will be taken against anyone who has failed to fulfill their legal responsibilities," the statement said.
