UNICEF reports on plight of Iraqi children

BAGHDAD, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Two million children in Iraq face malnutrition, lack of education, and threats of disease and violence, the United Nations Children's Fund reports.

The UNICEF report, "Little Respite for Iraq's Children in 2007," said the conflict in Iraq cost hundreds of children's lives, while coalition and Iraqi forces detained 1,350 children in 2007, the BBC reported Saturday.

The report said violence or intimidation displaced an average of 25,000 children per month and estimated the war forced about 75,000 into refugee camps or temporary shelters.

The majority of the displaced children in Iraq lack a proper education and only 28 percent of 17-year-olds took final exams in 2007, the report said.

Children in remote areas were found to lack sufficient healthcare and only 20 percent of those living outside Baghdad had access to a working waste water sewer system.

The agency did say, however, that more than 4 million children received vaccinations for polio and 3 million for measles.

The report also said over 500,000 internally displaced children received medical assistance, potable water and shelter from relief agencies and local communities.
