Serbia agrees to supply arms to Iraq

BELGRADE, Serbia, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The Serbian Defense Ministry has announced an agreement to sell $230 million in military equipment to Iraq.

In September and November, Defense Minister Abdul-Qadir al-Obaidi became the first top Iraqi official to visit Belgrade since the fall of Slobodan Milosevic. Milosevic had close ties to fellow former dictator, Saddam Hussein of Iraq.

During his trips, Obaidi discussed developing a closer relationship with Serbia, The Independent reported.

Assault rifles, machine guns, anti-tank weapons, ammunition and explosives are believed to be among the items Serbia will supply to Iran, the British newspaper said.

Yugoslav construction companies were active in Iraq in the 1970s and 1980s. They built command bunkers and military bases.
