LONDON, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- London, flush with economic and cultural successes, has outperformed its global rivals and can be deemed the world's capital city, a report maintains.

The Independent said Saturday that its recent study comparing the world's top cities found London's economy and culture place the British city above all others.

In addition to looking at financial markets and tourism trends in the targeted cities, the survey also took into account those cities' population figures, transport facilities and entertainment events.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone said his city was particularly empowered by its growing multiculturalism and financial dealings.

"London is establishing itself as the world's No. 1 financial center and greatest city in the world," Livingstone said. "Londoners are proud of our 'unity in diversity' and regard the multiculturalism of our city as one of its greatest strengths."

The British newspaper said New York was the world's second most successful city, while Paris' international airports and financial clout earned it the third spot on the newspaper's list.
