WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush sent a Christmas message to the country Friday and holiday greetings to the troops and to those who celebrate Kwanzaa.

In his message to the men and women in the armed forces, he thanked them for serving the country. He also mentioned them in his Christmas message.

"Many of those who have answered the call of duty will spend Christmas far from home and separated from family," he said. "We honor their sacrifice, ask God to watch over them and their families, and pray for their safe return."

Kwanzaa, a holiday for those of African descent created by political activist Ron Karenga, is celebrated between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1.

"I commend those observing this holiday for taking pride in your rich heritage," Bush said. "May the coming year be filled with the blessings of health and happiness."
