OMAHA, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- The Omaha store where a young man killed eight people reopened Thursday morning after a brief memorial service.
About 500 people attended a larger service Wednesday night, The Omaha World-Herald reported.
As employees of the Von Maur Department Store and city officials began singing "Silent Night" at the ceremony Wednesday night, hundreds standing outside joined in the carol,
During the day Wednesday, the store dismantled impromptu memorials to the nine people who died, removing flowers, teddy bears and messages of condolence.
Robert Hawkins, a young man with a troubled history who had recently lost his job and girlfriend, entered the store on Dec. 5 and opened fire, apparently at random. He killed eight people before taking his own life.
"We're all grieving, but in grief you always have to take one step forward to heal," said Dorie Manelli, a store employee who was in the mall during the shooting. "It would be awful if it closed, and to have this terrible hole here forever? . . . It would be like if the whole mall closed."
