DENVER, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A Roman Catholic church in Denver kept up its 18-year-old tradition Thursday of giving the needy $20 each at Christmas.
More than 1,000 people lined up outside the Immaculate Conception Cathedral for the gift, The Denver Post reported.
Gabe Trujillo, one of those waiting, said he planned to use the money for a bus ticket to Greeley to see his father, brother and sister. He told the newspaper he would go straight from the church to the bus station to buy the ticket.
Monsignor Charles Woodrich began giving Christmas cards with $10 bills inside to the poor in 1989. The cathedral continued the custom after his death in 1991 and doubled the amount in 1998.
A shelter that opened in October was named Father Woody's Haven Of Hope, using the nickname he was known by in Denver.
