BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Twenty years after a New Hampshire woman was convicted of soliciting the murder of her husband she said she bears some responsibility for his death.
In 1991 Pamela Smart faced charges that she coerced her 16-year-old high school lover, Billy Flynn, and three other teens to shoot and kill her husband, Gregory Smart, in Derry, N.H.
A jury found Smart guilty and she was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Although she still maintains her innocence, Smart said she still feels some responsibility for her husband's death, she said Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" program.
"It took me a long time to realize that I do have responsibility somewhere inside here," she said. "I did make a horrible decision. I made a bad choice. I made a selfish choice."
Smart, 40, has filed numerous appeals and lost all of them. She is incarcerated at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in Bedford, N.Y.
"I fear getting old in here and having to deal with the stresses inside here as an older person and dying in here alone," she said. "I would rather have the death penalty than have this sentence because I'd rather just have an end. This whole idea of no end is just sometimes too much to bear."
