LOMBARD, Ill., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- The mother of an astronaut stationed on the International Space Station died Wednesday in a car-train collision in a Chicago suburb, police said.

Lombard, Ill., police said Rose Tani, 90, of Lombard apparently passed a lowered crossing gate and was struck by a Union Pacific train, the Chicago Tribune reported. The train pushed the car along the tracks before it came to rest behind a school.

Tani was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her son, Daniel Tani, is an engineer and NASA astronaut. He traveled to the ISS as flight engineer aboard the space shuttle Discovery in October and is scheduled to return to Earth next month.
