Midyette, who had married and was running his own business, was arrested after being stopped by Hancock County authorities for erratic driving.

He had escaped from Union Correctional Center in 1988, about two years into his 60-year sentence. Extradition proceedings to return Midyette to North Carolina are under way, Indiana officials said Monday.

Midyette was arrested in 1985 in Fresno, Calif., in connection with a rape there. Investigators in Raleigh, however, had been looking for him for months on four charges related to a rape in North Carolina, the newspaper reported.

The U.S. Army also had issued an arrest warrant around the same time, listing him as a deserter from Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.

He pleaded guilty to sexual assault in California and then was extradited to North Carolina.
