BUDAPEST, Hungary, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Workers at Hungary's state-run railways, hospitals and schools went on strike Monday to protest the government's healthcare and pension reforms.
The strikes lasted several hours, triggering delays in train and commercial airplane services, the Hungarian news agency MTI said. Farmers blocked about 40 major roads.
About 10,000 teachers went on strike across the country and medical staff in some 15 hospitals joined the protest.
Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany of the socialist government said despite of the protests he believed his reforms, including privatization of the healthcare system, would be approved the parliament, the Serbian news agency Beta reported.
However, the Hungarian physicians association said that private health insurance companies would leave those ill and poor without healthcare they need.
The reforms also foresee cuts in retirement payments.
