EDINBURGH, Scotland, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The Scottish National Party and Liberal Democrats have accused each other of "sleaze" and "irresponsibility" in a dispute involving a Donald Trump golf resort.

The Scottish government overruled a local council's rejection of the $2 billion proposal for development on the coast near Aberdeen. Liberal Democratic leader Nicol Stephen said there was a "smell of sleaze" in the move, The Independent reported.

The SNP accused Stephen of being irresponsible for opposing a project expected to bring 1,400 jobs to the area.

"Nicol Stephen's game of seeking cheap headlines with false charges is the height of irresponsibility," said Brian Adam, an SNP representative in the Scottish Parliament.

Critics say the Trump project could harm the environment and charge that it is too big, threatening to dwarf golf courses in the area -- including the historic Old Course at St. Andrew's.
