Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor

MOGADISHU, Somalia, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Islamic insurgents in Somalia opened fire Thursday on Mogadishu's main market, killing at least 13 people.
More than 40 people were wounded in the shelling of the Baraka market, Voice of America reported.
The attack came nearly a year after the Somali government, backed by the Ethiopian army, drove militants from Mogadishu, VOA said.
Local leaders fear militants are regaining power and are possibly spreading beyond the Somali capital.
Somalia has been without an effective government since a 1991 coup ousted dictator Siad Barre.
Calling Somalia the world's most dire humanitarian crisis, the United Nations this week asked for $403 million in international aid for the beleaguered country.
