GREENWOOD, S.C., Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A South Carolina couple have been charged with cheating would-be parents with a surrogate mother scam.
Jessica O'Donnell allegedly posed as a war widow, saying her husband had been killed in Iraq, WYFF-TV in Greenwood, S.C., reported. Investigators say she offered to bear children for couples, telling them she wanted to help because of her personal tragedy.
In fact, her husband was very much alive. Both have been arrested and face six counts of obtaining money by false pretenses.
O'Donnell allegedly sent couples a picture of a soldier she claimed was her husband and made arrangements for them to ship sperm samples along with payments.
Greenwood County sheriff's deputies seized computers and other evidence from the couple's home. They plan to search the couple's e-mail looking for other victims.
