SACRAMENTO, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A Delta Airlines passenger jet made an emergency landing Wednesday, shortly after hitting a bird while taking off from a California airport.

Delta Flight 798, which was en route to Salt Lake City, hit the bird about 4 p.m. upon departure from Sacramento International Airport, KCRA-TV reported.

The bird collided with the pilot's windshield, so the pilot made a precautionary landing, according to the Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

The Sacramento airport has more incidents of planes hitting birds than any other airport in the state, the station reported.
