Lebanon postpones presidential election

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Lebanon's presidential election has been moved again from Tuesday to next Monday, the eighth such postponement since September.

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced the latest election delay after feuding camps agreed to the nation's army chief, Gen. Michel Suleiman, as a presidential candidate but failed to confirm the nod, Alalam Satellite TV reported.

The governing coalition and its opposition stumbled over amending a constitutional article that bans public servants from running for office, Alalam said. The parties need to strike a deal because neither has the two-thirds control of parliament required for a quorum in the election.

Lebanese President Emile Lahoud's term ended Nov. 24, and other nations have worried the vacancy could destabilize Lebanon.
