LONDON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A British man who mysteriously reappeared after he was thought drowned five years ago was remanded into custody Monday on suspicion of fraud.
John Darwin, who claimed memory loss when he walked into a London police station last week, is suspected of using deception to acquire $50,000 in life insurance money and making false statements to obtain a passport, The Times of London reported Monday.
Darwin was presumed dead five years ago when police discovered his canoe, which he had been using when he set out for a voyage, unattended.
Darwin's wife, Anne, was arrested at an airport in Manchester, England, Sunday on suspicion of fraud.
Anne Darwin initially claimed to be happy to discover her husband was not dead, but a photograph has surfaced depicting the couple together in Panama last year when John Darwin was supposedly thought dead by his family. Anne Darwin also is facing charges.
