Victim of Superman ride takes first steps

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old girl has taken her first steps since her feet were severed last summer on a ride at an amusement park in Kentucky.

Kaitlyn Lasitter is able to walk with the help of a prosthetic leg and crutches, The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal said Wednesday.

The Louisville teen was riding the Superman Tower of Power -- which lifts passengers 177 feet and then drops them at speeds of more than 50 mph -- at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom when a cable broke and severed her feet.

The family sued Kentucky Kingdom, claiming the theme park failed to maintain the ride and ensure riders' safety, the newspaper said. The state Department of Agriculture, which is in charge of ride safety is still investigating the accident, the newspaper said.

The theme plans to remove the ride early next year.
