Preppie Killer's girlfriend pleads guilty

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Shawn Kovell, girlfriend of Robert Chambers, the Preppie Killer, admitted to drug dealing Thursday in a New York plea deal that could spare her prison.

Kovell pleaded guilty to a felony that carries a five-year sentence, The New York Daily News reported. But if she successfully completes 18 months of drug rehabilitation she will be allowed to change her plea to an admission of a Class C felony with no prison time.

After her court appearance, Kovell told the newspaper that she remains faithful to Chambers, who faces a life sentence if he is convicted of drug charges.

"I love him," she said. "I'm not going anywhere."

Kovell became involved with Chambers while he was awaiting trial on charges of killing Jennifer Levin, who was found dead in Central Park. After Chambers pleaded guilty, she visited him in prison for years.

The couple moved out of New York after his release but returned to the city to live in the rent-controlled apartment Kovell had shared with her mother. They were arrested there and charged with dealing drugs.
