Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency Nov. 3 in response to Islamist violence. He also fired Chaudhry while awaiting word on whether he would be able to seek another term in office.

Chaudhry remained isolated in his home though not officially under house arrest.

Chaudhry issued several rulings weakening Musharraf's hold on power and lifted the exile imposed on Sharif.
