BERLIN, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The foreign ministers of Germany and Poland agreed in Berlin Thursday their two countries should work on improving strained bilateral relations.
Addressing reporters after their talks, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski said Berlin and Warsaw are ready to open a new chapter in their relations, Polish Radio reported.
Sikorski was named the foreign minister in the liberal, pro-EU government of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who took the office Nov. 16, replacing former conservative, nationalist Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
Tusk has promised to mend tense relations with the European Union and particularly with Germany.
Sikorski told a news conference his talks in Berlin covered a wide range of international issues such as the situation in Georgia and Ukraine, and relations with the EU and NATO.
Steinmeier and Sikorski also discussed energy security questions and the issue of a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, the radio said.
