MOSUL, Iraq, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has decided against moving U.S. Marine forces from Iraq to Afghanistan, military officials said Wednesday.
Gates reportedly told top Marine Corps officials and senior aides the situation in western Iraq, where the marines operate in Anbar Province, is too volatile to consider a personnel shift, The New York Times reported.
Gates, making his sixth visit to Iraq, reiterated his position during a news conference in Mosul, saying Iraqi, U.S. and allied forces now have the mission to "work together not only to sustain the momentum of recent months, but to build on it."
Defense Department officials said Gates met last week in Washington with Marine Corps Gen. James T. Conway, when he received a formal proposal to move Marine forces from Iraq to Afghanistan.
