LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Cardinal Roger Mahony, archbishop of Los Angeles, has told priests that he was physically assaulted a few days after a record sexual assault settlement.
Mahony said that the man yelled at him about the sexual abuse of children by Roman Catholic priests, a priest who was at the meeting where the cardinal described the assault told the New York Times. He said the attack took place in July, just after a judge approved the $660 million settlement with hundreds of abuse victims.
Speaking at a pastoral meeting in October, Mahony said the attack had been reported to police. He said it occurred outside Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral.
"He went down there to drop something off at the mailbox when this guy approached him, saying some stuff," said the Rev. Michael Gutierrez of St. Anne Catholic Church in Santa Monica. "Then, boom, the guy was on him."
A spokeswoman for the archdiocese said that the annual pastoral meeting is private and that she would not comment on anything Mahony said.
